Living Longer Living Stronger
Living Longer Living Stronger program delivered on the Central Coast
Living Longer Living Stronger
Australia’s population is ageing, and with it an increase in frailty and burden of disease. To help slow down the negative impact of ageing and support older Australians to improve their quality of life, Council on the Ageing (COTA) had developed an evidence-based exercise program called Living Longer Living Stronger that can help older adults to increase their strength, balance and mobility.
Feel free to read the article from “On The Coast over 55“, a publication designed for older adults living on the Central Coast.
What does that mean for me?
The Living Longer Living Stronger accredited exercise program promotes health and well-being amongst older Australians. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that regular strength and balance training:
- Reduce the risk of falling
- Improve mental wellbeing & cognitive function
- Improve body composition (more muscle, less fat)
- Improve self-esteem & self-confidence
- Improved ability to undertake activities of daily living & maintain an independent lifestyle
- Reduce lower back pain
- Improve bone density
- Management and recovery from chronic disease/conditions
What does the Living Longer Living Stronger program involve?
There are two parts to the program, an initial one on one assessment with your certified facilitator and then simply join the Living Longer Living Stronger classes which run at the below locations.
What can I expect?
During the one-on-one assessment, we will review the pre-exercise screening tool and ensure that you have a referral if necessary. We will also discuss your current physical activity, medical history, goals, and aspirations. Using this information, the LLLS facilitator will create a personalized exercise program tailored to your specific needs. This assessment typically takes around 45 minutes to complete.
Afterwards, you will join a class with other individuals who also have their own personalised program. Throughout the class, the LLLS facilitator will supervise and support you and your peers to ensure that you are correctly performing the exercises and know when to increase your weight or modify your exercises.
